land acknowledgement

The land upon which XR Philadelphia gathers is part of the traditional territory of the Lenni-Lenape, called “Lenapehoking.”

We acknowledge the Lenni-Lenape as the original people of this land and their continuing relationship with their territory. During the colonial era and early federal period, many died from introduced diseases and others were forcefully removed as far as Wisconsin, Oklahoma and to Canada. Some also remain among the continuing historical tribal communities of the region, including the Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation.

We also acknowledge that Philadelphia has a unique position as the place of the nation’s founding, and its successors are still responsible to uphold treaty rights of the land stolen and to correct the wrong-doings of policies that led to enslavement, massacre, and forced assimilation of Indigenous peoples across the continent.  The effect of this colonial genocide legacy is yet to be addressed.
